Retired Cuban volleyball player Joël Despaigne Charles, nicknamed El Diablo (The Devil), has been selected for induction into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame (IVHF) in the men's indoor player category, in recognition of the extraordinary achievements he accomplished during the 1980s and 1990s, the organization announced on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Despaigne, born July 2, 1966, in Santiago de Cuba and now 59 years old, was widely regarded as one of the finest outside hitters of his generation. Known for his ferocious spike — with a vertical jump estimated at around 40 inches (102 cm) and a spike speed of approximately 75 mph (121 kph) — he was named the world's best player in 1990 by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). He led Cuba to the gold medal at the 1989 FIVB World Cup in Japan and to the silver medal at the 1990 FIVB World Championship in Brazil.

He represented Cuba at two consecutive Summer Olympics — Barcelona 1992, where the Caribbean team finished fourth, and Atlanta 1996, where Cuba placed sixth — and was a driving force behind Cuba's sustained success in the World League from 1991 to 1997, during which the team repeatedly reached the podium. He also helped Cuba win gold at the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana. With approximately 350 international appearances, his legacy ranks among the greatest in the history of Cuban and world volleyball.

The announcement marks the IVHF's 40th Class of Inductees. Joining Despaigne in the 2026 class are Brazilian beach volleyball players Alison Cerutti and Fabiana "Fabi" Alvim, and Russian indoor player Ekaterina Gamova. The official induction ceremony will take place on October 17 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA — the birthplace of volleyball and home of the IVHF.

Despaigne retired from competitive play in 2002 while competing in Italy, the country where he currently lives and works as a volleyball coach. With his induction, the Santiago de Cuba native becomes the first member of Cuba's men's national volleyball team to be honored by the IVHF — one of the most prestigious distinctions in the sport worldwide.
