Jesús Guanche: National Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities 2023

On the afternoon of Tuesday, December 26, at the Dulce María Loynaz Cultural Center, the jury in charge of awarding the National Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities 2023 announced that the award was conferred, unanimously, on the distinguished academic, Doctor of Historical Sciences Juan Jesús Guanche Pérez.

The jury, presided over by the distinguished intellectual Miguel Barnet and composed of Alberto Prieto Rozos, member of the Cuban Academy of History; Marlene Vázquez, director of the Center for Martian Studies; René González Barrios, president of the Institute of History of Cuba; and Omar Valiño, director of the National Library of Cuba José Martí, argued in its final report:

For his research work within social and cultural anthropology. His studies of the ethnic components of the Cuban nation are notable and demonstrate the depth of his thinking. Having incorporated innovative and little-studied aspects of Cuban popular culture in both its Hispanic and African origins. His vast work constitutes a model to follow in anthropological studies.

His creative participation in the work of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, the Academy of History, and the Cuban Society Friends of the Country.
