Cuban former high jumper Javier Sotomayor, world record holder and Olympic champion from Barcelona 1992, received today here the Legend of the Americas award, granted by Panam Sports.
Along with the 56-year-old Caribbean athlete, swimmers Mark Spitz (United States), Thiago Pereira (Brazil) and Dominican hurdler Félix Sánchez shared the nomination.
Upon receiving the award, Sotomayor, six-time world champion, two outdoors and four indoors, thanked Panam Sports, his family, coaches and friends, and also stated that it was a great honor for him to have such recognition in his hands.
At the awards ceremony, winners were recognized in 11 other categories and the voting process to reach a verdict was open to fans from last December 5th.
