The wrestler Ismael Borrero and the discus thrower Yaimé Pérez were chosen as the best Cuban athletes of 2019. The news was announced this morning in the sports city during a meeting with the press.
Among the team sports, the honor went to handball player Niurkis Mora and volleyball player Osniel Mergarejo.
The rookie of the year distinction fell to gladiator Gabriel Rosillo, while the duo of canoeists Serguei Torres and Fernando Dayán Jorge were the highlight of the non-individual event.
The list of the top 10 was made up of wrestler Mijaín López, boxers Julio César La Cruz, Lázaro Álvarez, and Andy Cruz, cyclist Arlenys Sierra, judokas Idalys Ortiz and Iván Felipe Silva, discus thrower Denia Caballero, taekwondoka Rafael Alba and long jumper Juan Miguel Echevarría.
Special mentions were received by wrestler Oscar Pino and weightlifter Ludia Montero, while Mijaín's feat of winning his fifth Pan American title took top honors as the event of the year.
The most outstanding individual sport was wrestling, while the most outstanding team sport was volleyball. This specialty also received the award for best team to honor the men's indoor volleyball team, second at the Lima Pan American Games and first at the Norceca Challenger Cup.
Regarding sports for athletes with disabilities, speed athlete Omara Durand, weightlifter Leydi Rodríguez and swimmer Lorenzo Pérez stood out for their trajectory.
At the same time, work is underway on the preparation of the Awards Gala for the Best Athletes of the current year, which does not yet have a defined date.
