Ineymig Hernández shines at Samarkand Chess Olympiad with 8 points from 9

Cuban chess player Ineymig Hernández Gil is delivering one of Cuba’s standout individual performances at the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, according to the Cuban News Agency and JIT, with tournament context corroborated by Chess.com.

After nine of eleven rounds, the Woman International Master from Camagüey has eight points from nine games and an estimated performance rating of 2443 Elo, temporarily placing her among the silver-medal contenders on board four. In round nine she defeated Poland’s Monika Socko with the white pieces; Socko is a grandmaster, eight-time national champion and the 2022 European women’s champion.

Despite Hernández’s win, Cuba’s women’s team fell 1.5–2.5 to Poland, a result Chess.com also places in that round’s results. Cuba stood on 12 match points and was due to face Sri Lanka in round ten, while China led the women’s event with 17 points.
