The distinction is granted for Prieto's love and dedication to the rescue of the history and cultural identity of peoples
The National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN-Managua) awarded on August 15th the title of Doctor Honoris Causa in Humanities to Cuban writer and intellectual, president of Casa de las Américas, Abel Prieto. According to the Prensa Latina agency, the ceremony took place in the Fernando Gordillo auditorium, of the institution of higher learning.
In the words of the institution's rector, Ramona Rodríguez, the distinction is granted for Prieto's love and dedication to the rescue of the history and cultural identity of peoples. It is also a recognition of his dedicated work and his contributions to the consolidation of a more humanistic, solidary and just society, to strengthen peace and friendship between the peoples and governments of Cuba and Nicaragua.
The awarding of the title took place as part of the commemoration of the 93rd and 97th anniversaries of the births of the founding member of the Sandinista National Liberation Front, Tomás Borge, and the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, respectively.
After the ceremony, about 400 people, including academics, students and other guests, participated in a conversation led by the Cuban writer, as part of a panel that addressed, among other topics, the political-cultural legacy of Fidel and Borge.
