The National Academy of Song Mariana de Gonitch held a tribute to Sara González, on the 68th anniversary of her birth, by holding the VI Competition that bears the name of the singer-songwriter, yesterday July 14 at the Memorial de la Denuncia, in this capital.
Hugo Oslé, director of the artistic collective, emphasized the versatility of the singer, composer and guitarist, who was born on July 13, 1951 and was one of the most relevant exponents of the New Song Movement.
The competition jury that pays tribute to Sara, who passed away seven years ago, was presided over by Enrique (Kiki) Corona and included, among others, singers Raúl Torres and Gerardo Alfonso, as well as María Victoria Rodríguez, interpreter and composer of country music.
26 young people participated in the event, whose ages ranged between 15 and 35 years old, who were preselected with a view to the competition in tribute to Sara González, author of Son de ayer y de hoy, Con un poco de amor, Su nombre es pueblo and Girón, la victoria, the last melody she composed in homage to the Cuban victory at Playa Girón, which took place in April 1961.
