The happiness was short-lived. Cuban baseball player Miguel Vargas, son of the star Lázaro Vargas, was demoted in recent hours to the Triple A team of the Los Angeles Dodgers, following his recent Major League debut.
"Cuban prospect Miguel Vargas (22) was sent down to Triple-A in recent hours. He only saw 8 at-bats and played 2 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers in MLB. We'll see when he returns, but this is not a good sign," wrote baseball specialist Francys Romero on his Twitter.
A Vargas follower pointed out that although the Dodgers respect his bat, "the best thing for him would have been for them to trade him in a package for Soto. Friedman realized that the Nats were asking for too much and didn't do that. Instead, he reinforced the infield with a glove like Gallo and who offensively has recovered a bit".
"There's nothing strange about it. That team's infield is Freeman, Lux, Trea Turner, and Muncy. He wasn't going to get plate appearances. Better to have him getting at-bats in AAA than warming the bench in MLB," said another American baseball fan.
Cuban baseball fans experienced on August 3rd how the record for Cubans in a Major League Baseball (MLB) season was broken, with the presence of 32 nationals reaching that milestone.
With Vargas's debut, the number of 32 Cubans in a season was completed, breaking the previous record from 2019, when 30 Cubans played at the same time in the Big Leagues.
Vargas made his debut in baseball in the National Series of the island at just 15 years old, but he left Cuba in 2015, so he did little in national championships. Two years later, in 2017, he signed with the Dodgers for $300,000.
His father, Lázaro, in an interview with MLB, had no hesitation in describing that moment as the best thing that has ever happened to him in his life. Father Vargas wore an Industriales shirt in the stands and jumped for joy after his son's first double in the Major Leagues.
