The Celia Cruz Foundation recognized on August 30th the work of Cuban researcher and producer Rosa Marquetti on the occasion of the presentation of her book Celia in Cuba (1925-1962).
"The Celia Cruz Foundation recognizes Rosa Marquetti for preserving the legacy of #celiacruz (...) during the presentation of her book Celia in Cuba 1925-1962, a unique work that highlights Celia's admirable and fruitful career in her native Cuba. We also want to congratulate Rosa today, on her birthday," they stated on their Facebook profile.
The event took place on August 26th at the famous bookstore "Books & Books", located in Coral Gables, where Marquetti answered questions about the life of the "Queen of Salsa".
For the preparation of her text, the researcher investigated newspaper articles from that era and reviewed interviews, testimonies, and writings by the singer preserved in archives from several Latin American countries and the United States.
"There were large gaps in the way she spoke about her relationship with Cuba and, at the same time, in official history. For many reasons that are revealed in the book, Celia avoided talking about those years, but they are the most important ones," said the writer, based in Madrid.
Rosa Marquetti holds a degree in Philology from the University of Havana. Her professional connection with Cuban music began in 1993, when she worked as an executive at the Pablo Milanés Foundation, where she worked for two years.
Her bibliography includes books such as Chano Pozo: La vida (1915-1948), El Niño con su tres. Andrés Echevarría Callava, Niño Rivera, Desmemoriados: Historias de la música cubana, as well as this last one: Celia in Cuba (1925-1960).
Likewise, she is the creator and editor of the blog Desmemoriados: Historias de la música cubana (desmemoriados.com), founded in 2014, in which she continues rescuing the roots of national culture from exile.
