On the afternoon of Monday, June 1st, musician Pedro Trujillo, founder of the Moncada group, died in Havana as a result of cancer.
Trujillo, whom everyone called Pedro el Gordo, studied at the University of Havana and was an enthusiastic member of Grupo Moncada from its inception.
He played the flute, saxophone, and quena. During Moncada's 48 years, he was present at all performances, recordings, national and international tours. His presence and charisma distinguished the presentations of this emblematic group of our culture.
As part of the Moncada group, he was the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions, among them: Distinction for National Culture, Raúl Gómez García Medal, the Giraldilla of Havana, 250th Anniversary of the University of Havana, Cubadisco Awards, Abril Prize, and Cantándole al Sol Prize, among others.
