On the morning of August 10, Dr. Alfredo Braulio Ceballos Mesa passed away, Specialist of I and II Degree in Orthopedics and Traumatology, Doctor of Sciences, Senior Researcher, Consulting Professor and Professor Emeritus; a professor of professors, friend, father and true revolutionary. Ceballos was born in Cienfuegos on March 26, 1935. He graduated in 1961 as a Doctor of Medicine.
From then on, many works and projects came from his hands and his thinking: the creation of the Army Medical Personnel School in Camagüey province; medical assistance in 1970 to those affected by the earthquake in Managua, Nicaragua; internationalist aid in the People's Republic of Angola.
He trained with great professionalism in topics such as external fixation of bones according to Ilizarov; post-trauma rehabilitation and curontology; microsurgery applied to limb injuries; external fixation system, among others. His results and his extensive service record are part of the enormous and invaluable legacy he left to our specialty and to Cuban medicine.
Several institutions benefited from his expertise: the "Ignacio Agramonte" Hospital in Camagüey; the Institute of Orthopedic Surgery, today "Fructuoso Rodríguez" Hospital; the "General Calixto García" Hospital; the "Carlos J. Finlay" Hospital; and the Center for Medical-Surgical Research (CIMEQ), the latter two in Havana. All of his work is reflected in numerous publications, including research articles, books and monographs.
Professor Ceballos received in 2016 the Award for Scientific Merit for a Lifetime of Work, granted by MINSAP.
