Dr. Fidel Llorente, president of the Cuban Society of Coloproctology, dies of Covid-19 in Havana

On social media, colleagues, students, and patients have mourned the death of Francisco Fidel Llorente Llamo, a Cuban doctor who passed away last weekend as a consequence of coronavirus.

Llorente worked as a colorectal surgery specialist at the Comandante Manuel Fajardo University Clinical Surgical Hospital in Havana and contracted the disease while fulfilling his work duties.

This renowned doctor who had 37 years of experience in medicine was hospitalized for several days in the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition, but unfortunately was unable to overcome the disease.

"With deep sorrow we received this morning the passing of an eminent physician and exceptional human being, infected with this deadly virus while fulfilling his duty as a doctor at Hospital Fajardo. Your friends and family have no consolation to accept your departure, only to embrace you with our hug of eternal gratitude so that you arrive safely to your eternal home. We will always love you Paquito", wrote Laura Rodríguez.

Héctor Demetrio Bayarre, an old classmate, recalled that not only was he an excellent professional who cared for his patients, but he was also a great person and an excellent friend.

"Just a moment ago, he ceased to exist, victim of Covid-19, our colleague and brother from the Graduation of Cuban Doctors of 1983, Dr. Francisco Fidel Llorente Llamo. There were several days of fighting against death, during which he remained in critical condition in an Intensive Care Unit in our capital. Since the news spread through the WhatsApp group of our graduation class, all our thoughts were directed toward his recovery and we always maintained hope that it would be possible to reverse such a process. Obviously, despite our profession, we are never prepared to receive such news and that has been the cause of our dismay at such a loss. It should be added that Dr. Llorente was a prominent colorectal surgeon at the capital's Manuel Fajardo hospital. After more than 37 years of practicing his profession, he was one of the most relevant figures in his specialty in our country, being the Head of the National Group at the time of his death, which fills us all with pride.

For his outstanding scientific and academic activity he participated in multiple conferences, the last being held in Mexico.

On the other hand, through the page Facultad de Ciencias Médicas "Manuel Fajardo", they also mourned the death of this beloved doctor.

"Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Francisco Fidel Llorente Llano who passed away this morning, fighting day after day with his duty at the Manuel Fajardo Clinical Surgical Hospital. The pandemic has taken one of the excellent professionals and one of high degree of humanism and solidarity. We will miss him every day, his legacy remains imprinted in all doctors, family, and friends. An exceptional man, of constant dedication, passionate about his profession. Dr. Llorente graduated as a doctor in 1983, was 66 years old at his death, and was the President of the Cuban Society of Colorectal Surgery.
