Musicologist María del Rosario Hernández Iznada Passes Away

On the morning of July 30, María Del Rosario Hernández Iznaga passed away, or as many affectionately called her, Mary Rosa.


Musicologist and master pedagogue at the Instituto Superior de Artes and mentor to many.


Wise, honest, brilliant, fighter, enterprising and cultural manager Mari Rosa leaves us her example of consistency and infinite dedication to the development of Cuban musical culture.


Teacher of several generations of Cuban musicians and friend, colleague and sister to many.


Casa de las Américas will always be grateful for her contribution as a jury member of the 2016 Musicology Prize and her mark on several editions of the International Musicology Colloquium Casa de las Américas.

 

She was Director of the National School of Tourism Animation. Dean of the Faculty of Music of the Instituto Superior de Arte during the years 1990-1996.


She was born in La Habana on September 7, 1955. She studied at the conservatories "Guillermo Tomás" (1960-1967) and "Amadeo Roldán" (1967-1969), at the National School of Art ENA (1969-1973) and at the "Tchaikovsky" in Moscow (1977-1983), where she obtained a degree in Musicology, and at the ISA, where she pursued a Master's degree in Art with a focus on Music (2001).


Work as a Professor


As a professor of Musical Literature, Morphology and Music History, she worked from 1973 at the Provincial School of Art in Matanzas, the National School of Music and the Faculty of Music of the ISA; she was a tutor, opponent and consultant for course and diploma work, and participated in numerous scientific and artistic events.


The theoretical-historical relationship of musical processes in Cuba and since 1997, and together with Dinorah Valdés, she conducted studies on current Cuban dance music and its main representatives. She is currently a professor in the Department of Musicology at the ISA.
