Researcher Rodrigo Espina Prieto Passes Away

Distinguished Cuban researcher MSc. Rodrigo Espina Prieto passed away this Wednesday, March 8th, from cancer.

A graduate in Philology and Master's degree holder in Anthropology, he was a dedicated scholar of crucial topics in our society and culture, such as inequalities, racism, and the manifestations and expressions of popular culture in the country, on which he published numerous articles and compiled important books that have become essential bibliography for addressing these subjects.

During his fruitful intellectual career, he worked in various institutions such as the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, the Cuban Institute of Anthropology, the Center for Studies on Youth, and the Cuban Institute of Cultural Research (ICIC) Juan Marinello, where he also served until his death as Vice Director of Research, work that contributed to the development of the Institute and the training of new generations.

He also taught at the University of Havana and at the Municipal University Branch of Diez de Octubre.

He was a frequent collaborator with other scientific and academic institutions such as the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences and the Latin American Council of Social Sciences. He was an advisor to the National Program Against Racism and Racial Discrimination.

"We will always remember his industriousness, his rigor, his critical thinking and courage to defend his criteria from a revolutionary stance, his willingness, free from any elitism, to offer help to anyone who requested it, and his constant concern and dedication to building a better world. Our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues who will remember him forever," wrote ICIC Juan Marinello.
