After a long illness, Professor Jorge Luis Pacheco Borrego passed away this afternoon in Havana.
Jorge Luis Pacheco is the only Cuban graduate in the specialty of lyric singing from the Chaikovski Conservatory in Moscow. Upon his return, he became part of the stable cast of the National Opera of Cuba as a baritone, performing multiple roles in opera, operetta, and zarzuela in the country and in more than a dozen nations.
For several years he served as general director of said institution, and was also a professor of the singing chair at the Instituto Superior de Arte, while he participated in the preparation of the initial study program for the specialty.
Pacheco, who received multiple medals and recognitions, obtained the category of Master in Formative Processes for the Teaching of the Arts, holding directorship positions in the musicals division of the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television, an organization from which he also was a member and presided over juries in important competitions.
Together with maestro Corina Campos, he founded the Leo Vocal Chamber Choir, and in recent years was a vocal technique master at the Teaching Unit of the National Lyric Theater of Cuba.
