Outstanding Cuban Endocrinologist Professor Bartolomé Arce Passes Away in Havana

On the afternoon of this Monday, February 7, the beloved professor Bartolomé Arce Hidalgo passed away in Havana, an outstanding figure in Cuban medicine, teaching, and research, who made notable contributions to the development of Endocrinology.

Founder of the Institute of Endocrinology and the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital, Professor Arce was a Full Member of the Academy. Doctor of Sciences and Doctor of Medical Sciences, Senior Researcher and Researcher of Merit, Full Professor and Consulting Professor, 1st and 2nd Degree Specialist in Endocrinology, Member of the Cuban Society of Endocrinology, the International Society of Andrology, and the Academy of Sciences of New York.

He distinguished himself in the performance of important leadership positions both in Cuba and abroad. His participation was always significant in innumerable national and international congresses related to Endocrinology, Human Reproduction, Hospital Management, and Accreditation, as well as in various postgraduate courses that he also taught.

He was a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Superior Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana and also a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Oran in Algeria. He supervised multiple theses for specialists and doctors in Medical Sciences and was part of the committees for the Endocrinology residency and doctoral programs. He distinguished himself as a professor in the training of specialists and organized and developed accreditation activities for health institutions in the country.

He published more than one hundred articles in Cuban specialty journals and international journals; and eight books.

He held numerous recognitions, among which stand out:

Order "Carlos J. Finlay".
Order "Frank País" of II Degree.
Order "Playa Girón".
Medal "International Fighter".
Distinction "For Service in the MININT" (5-10-15 years)
Distinction "Manuel Fajardo".
In 2020, he received – from the hands of the president of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez – the honorary title of Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba, a decoration awarded by the Council of State to people with extraordinary merits.
