Adalberto Álvarez Urges Celebration of Cuban Son Day

Master Adalberto Álvarez, 2008 National Music Prize, will celebrate Cuban Son Day from the capital on May 8th, and urged all son musicians to join in the festivity from their localities.

In a livestream conducted a few hours ago, Álvarez, known as "the Gentleman of Son," said that a party makes no sense without the honoree, and in this case that Cuban musical genre will be the center of attention of the celebration.

He emphasized that due to the date, established by decree of the Ministry of Culture in October 2020, a tribute party can be held from any corner, adapting it to the epidemiological circumstances that may exist within three months.

Álvarez announced that a major concert is being organized that will be broadcast on May 8th itself and will bring together major exponents of son from throughout the country, taking the pertinent sanitary measures to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

May 8th was declared Cuban Son Day in homage to that musical-dance expression and to the musical legacy of its great exponents, Miguel Matamoros and Miguelito Cuní.

In his message through social networks, the musician and conductor of the orchestra Adalberto Álvarez y su Son clarified rumors about the Matamoros Son Festival that traditionally takes place in Santiago de Cuba, which he led for more than 20 years and has stopped holding. He urged some Santiago son musician to take it on so it is not lost.

Regarding his new recording production that will be titled Segunda Vuelta, he commented that they are still in the recording stage, and a pause was necessary to avoid compromising the health of the musicians in the face of the new outbreak.

Adalberto Álvarez confirmed in this regard that the first volume—of two—of the album is almost ready, and will include classics present in his career such as La soledad es mala consejera, and Se quema la Trocha, performed by young son musicians.
