THE documentary With Soul in the Land, about the life and work of Jaime Crombet Hernández-Vaquero —who passed away on May 25, 2013— premiered on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 10:30 in the morning at the Palace of Fine Arts.
Jaime (as his family members, friends, and work and struggle companions called him) held different political responsibilities in the Revolution, first in the 1960s decade, among them that of First Secretary of the UJC at the University of La Habana and later as the top leader of the political organization throughout the country.
He was also head of the Centenary Youth Column (CJC) that mobilized 50,000 young Cubans in response to the call of Army General Raúl Castro, toward agricultural production in the province of Camagüey; Party leader in the capital of the Island; and in the final stretch of his distinguished trajectory he held the important position of vice president of the National Assembly of People's Power.
The Centenary Youth Column, for example, created on August 3, 1968, in homage to the hundred years since the struggle of our heroic mambises began, was an agricultural production institution with a semi-military character that came to become under his wise, firm and judicious leadership one of the most productive forces in the country, and the most outstanding of all Cuba in the sugar harvests, bastion of our economy.
In the film one can see in detail the testimony of the serious, responsible, disciplined manner, and at the same time noble and generous way in which Jaime "commanded without commanding," —as Nicolás Guillén would say about Che in his anthological poem— in the task that was entrusted to him.
The filmmaker of the documentary is Rafael González Mesa, from the National Association of Communicators, graduated as a Television Director and current collaborator of the ICRT, who was commissioned with this documentary. He and his work team shared with those in attendance details about the process of making the work that collects a good part of the personal history of the unforgettable comrade.
The screening was attended by Jaime's intimate friends and comrades who were subordinate to him or shared with him crucial work in the different stages in which he was a leader of the Revolution. And, of course, his closest family members will be there sharing with those in attendance.
