Elián González will soon be a father

The life of Elián González Brotons could have had several stories. He could have died at sea or remained in the United States, after a terrible shipwreck in which his mother, Elizabeth Brotons Rodríguez, died on November 25, 1999.



After being rescued and taken to Miami, Elián suffered misfortune by being detained by some maternal relatives who had no legal rights over him. From then until June 28, 2000, a bitter judicial, media, and political struggle unfolded, because a group of Cubans residing in Miami wanted to keep him there, while his father demanded his return home, and the Cuban people took to the streets in marches and open forums to support that demand.



Today, on the 20th anniversary of Elián's arrival in Havana. He was barely six years old. Now he is 26 and is a strong young man, of average height, a good conversationalist, noble and hardworking. He, also a graduate of industrial engineering, has announced that he will soon be the father of a girl.
