At 40 years old, Cuban right-handed pitcher Yunesky Maya continues to be a guarantee of success in the winter baseball championship in the Dominican Republic.
Beyond the victories that a pitcher can individually obtain, his success lies in the opportunities he provides his team to win and in the effectiveness of his work on the mound, and that is precisely what Maya has achieved in his performance with the Águilas Cibaeñas in the winter tournament.
The veteran pitcher, who leads the starting rotation of the Águilas, has made three starts so far in the competition, achieving a 2-1 record, which could have been 3-0, but he did not receive offensive support in his last outing against the Toros del Este, in a game in which he covered five innings allowing two runs and struck out two batters.
The earned run average of 1.19 that Maya boasts shows how effective his work has been for the defending champions of the Dominican Professional Baseball League. In three games for the Cibaeños, the native of Pinar del Río, Cuba, has pitched 15.1 innings, in which he has allowed just two runs and has retired 10 batters by strikeout. In his three starts, Maya has averaged five or more innings and fewer than two runs per appearance, which gives his team's offense the advantage of less pressure when it comes to scoring runs to win a game.
Although logically, a pitcher who accumulates wins has contributed to his team achieving them as well, if his earned run average is 4.00, it places greater pressure on his teammates in charge of driving in runs, since they must score at least five runs to be able to win the game, unlike when, as is the case with Maya, it is 1.19, which allows them to win by scoring three runs or fewer.
When a manager puts a pitcher on the field, he seeks the opportunity to achieve victory and Maya has responded, without a doubt, to that task so far in the Dominican baseball tournament, establishing himself as a true trump card.
