For the first time in the history of the Pan American Games, Chile will host this multisport event, from October 20 to November 5. Likewise, this country will make its debut in the baseball tournament, thanks to its status as host. Its team appears in group A, along with Mexico, Panama and the Dominican Republic, while in bracket B are the representatives of Cuba, Venezuela, Brazil and Colombia.
Few know that the manager and technical director of the Chilean national team is Cuban Kaleeb Nelson Campo Godínez, born in Havana on July 6, 1974, with experience in the island's National Series as a player and coach and with an extensive career as a trainer in different categories on the island and abroad.
On May 20, 2022, the Chilean Baseball and Softball Federation (FECHIBEIS) reported that the native of the capital arrived in the nation thanks to the Olympic Plan and his main objective was to collaborate in preparing the team with a view to the 2023 Pan American Games. His time in island baseball was highlighted, as well as Venezuela (from 2007 to 2009 he served a mission in the state of Apure) and Italy (he worked two years in the city of Milano, with the Legnano Sports Society).
Campo has done very professional work with the athletes of the Chilean team and one of the results that weighed most in his appointment as manager was the title achieved at the International Festival in Guatemala, in August 2022.
Kaleeb, 49 years old, participated in three seasons of Cuba's main baseball tournament: Metropolitanos (1993-1994 and 1994-1995) and Industriales (1997-1998). As a pitcher, he worked in 18 games, with a record of two wins and one loss, an ERA of 5.00, seven strikeouts, 12 walks and six doubles as extra-base hits. In 1987 he was part of a national team in the 15-16 age category.
Later, in editions 55 (2015-2016) and 56 (2016-2017), under the direction of Javier Méndez, he served as the first pitching coach of the Lions.
