Cuban diva, Omara Portuondo will offer online concert

The diva of Buena Vista Social Club, Omara Portuondo, will offer an online concert this Friday with flutist Ethiel Faílde, to support the fight being waged in Cuba for the prevention and control of Covid-19.

The recital will be broadcast on the frequencies of the Clave television channel, Radio Progreso, the Ministry of Culture's Youtube channel and through a link on one hundred Facebook pages, thanks to the joint work of the aforementioned state department, the Institute of Music and the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television.

The initiative began operating this same week, on various digital platforms, with concerts by singers and composers Eduardo Sosa, Marta Campos and Diego Gutiérrez.

The online recital by the first of these singers was viewed in 45 countries and the plays exceeded five thousand 500.

In this way, the mentioned institutions support the online broadcasts of artists from their homes and cultural centers, in order to support the measures taken by the government to protect citizens from the new coronavirus.

Numerous cultural creators and promoters have joined this purpose that began on the island with an initiative by native musician David Blanco to share a concert from his home's living room via Facebook Live, the digital platform Tumturuntu Pa Tu Casa and the youtube channel "Litle Cube Time".

Portuondo, 89 years old, was distinguished in 2019 with the Prize for Musical Excellence awarded by the Latin Academy of Recording.

The so-called bride of feeling is one of the most successful and beloved vocalists in Cuba, her discography spans about thirty titles and she has recorded with the most notable Cuban and foreign artists.

With her album Gracias, Portuondo won the 2009 Latin Grammy Award in the Best Contemporary Tropical Album category, and thus became the first Cuban artist residing in her country to win this prestigious award and receive it with her own hands.

Furthermore, she treasures the National Music Prize (2006) and last year she undertook a world tour that took her to stages in the United States and Europe with great success.
