Cuban Music Icon Omara Portuondo Becomes a Great-Grandmother

Legendary Cuban singer Omara Portuondo has a new great-granddaughter. Her granddaughter, Rossio Jiménez Portuondo, announced on social media on August 25, 2026, that she had given birth, sharing the news with a photo of the newborn, whom the family has nicknamed "Baby Tokyo."

"And suddenly my whole world fits in my arms. Welcome to the world, Baby Tokyo," Jiménez Portuondo wrote in her announcement, which quickly drew congratulations from friends, family and fans of the Portuondo family on social media.

Omara Portuondo, 95, is one of the most celebrated voices in Cuban music history, known internationally as "La Novia del Feeling" and for her role in the Buena Vista Social Club project, alongside artists such as Compay Segundo and Ibrahim Ferrer. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, she has won multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations and awards, including a Latin Grammy for Best Contemporary Tropical Album in 2009. The birth of her great-granddaughter marks a joyful family milestone for the singer, who remains an active and beloved figure among Cubans on and off the island.
