Cuban journalist Javier Díaz has been named co-anchor of the 6 p.m. newscast at Univision Miami, sharing the desk with Jenny Padura starting Monday, August 17, 2026. The announcement was confirmed this week by the station, TelevisaUnivision's Miami affiliate.
Díaz, born in San José de las Lajas, in Mayabeque province, earned a degree in Social Communication in 2011 and got his start working in Cuban radio and television before emigrating from the island in 2015. He joined Telemundo 51 in Miami the following year, where he covered major stories including the death of Fidel Castro.
Since November 2018, Díaz has built his career at Univision, where his reporting on breaking news, immigration and investigative stories has drawn a large following. He stepped into the anchor chair for the station's weekend newscasts in October 2024, taking over from Mario Vallejo, before his latest promotion to the weekday evening broadcast.
Colleagues describe Díaz as a meticulous reporter whose own journey as an immigrant has shaped his approach to covering stories that resonate with South Florida's Cuban and broader Latino communities. His new role places him among the most visible Spanish-language broadcast journalists in Miami.
