Cuban Baseball Legend Elpidio "Pillín" Mancebo Dies at 82

Elpidio Mancebo Pérez, one of the most respected first basemen in the history of Cuba's National Series and a member of the country's 1971 amateur world championship team, died on August 18, 2026, in his native Santiago de Cuba. He was 82. The cause of death has not been made public.

Known throughout his career by the nickname "Pillín," Mancebo was born on April 18, 1944, in the Los Hoyos neighborhood of Santiago de Cuba. He debuted in the National Series in 1963 with the Orientales team and went on to play 17 seasons, becoming the first player from eastern Cuba to win a batting title when he hit .327 for the Mineros club in the 1972-73 season.

His signature moment on the international stage came at the 1971 World Amateur Baseball Championship in Havana, where his hitting helped Cuba finish the tournament undefeated after a decisive win over Nicaragua; he was named to the event's All-Star team. Mancebo also represented Cuba at the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, where two home runs in a single game against Mexico contributed to a key Cuban victory, and competed in international tournaments in Indonesia, Aruba, Curaçao, Mexico, Italy and Panama over the course of his career.

After retiring as a player, Mancebo worked as a sports commentator for Radio Mambí and Radio Revolución in Santiago de Cuba, served as a batting instructor for younger players, and wrote several instructional books on hitting technique. Cuban sports media and colleagues, including the Santiago de Cuba Avispas baseball team, paid tribute to him this week, remembering him as one of the pillars of Oriente-region baseball and a player never once ejected from a game in his long career.
