Cuban Artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara Arrives in Miami After Five Years in Prison

Cuban visual and performance artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara arrived in Miami on July 18, 2026, after completing a five-year prison sentence in Cuba and receiving a U.S. visa the day before his release. He was met at Miami International Airport by friends and human rights activists.

Otero Alcántara, born December 2, 1987, in Havana's El Cerro neighborhood, is a self-taught artist known for performance and installation work exploring everyday life in Cuba. He co-founded the San Isidro Movement, a collective of artists, writers and musicians based in Havana's San Isidro neighborhood that has organized around greater freedom of artistic expression on the island.

He was detained on July 11, 2021, while attempting to join public demonstrations that day, and was sentenced in 2022 to five years in prison on charges that Cuban authorities described as insulting national symbols, contempt and public disorder. Amnesty International had designated him a prisoner of conscience, and he was later awarded Norway's Rafto Human Rights Prize in 2024 and the Prince Claus Impact Award in 2022; Time magazine included him on its list of the 100 most influential people in 2021.

Upon arriving in Miami, Otero Alcántara said his first stop would be the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Charity to give an offering. In interviews since his release, he has said he intends to continue working in art and expressed hope for Cuba's future.
