This Saturday in Camagüey, a heritage city of Cuba, the first concert in tribute to maestro Adalberto Álvarez, one of its most illustrious sons, took place.
The Adalberto Álvarez Orchestra and his Son performed the concert, dedicated to the Gentleman of Son, who is being honored during the Week of Culture celebrating the 508th anniversary of the former Villa.
Adalberto Álvarez, one of the most covered artists in the history of Cuban music and the genre globally, is remembered in the land where he felt he belonged even though he was born in Havana in 1947.
Álvarez had his artistic breakthrough and professional development in Camagüey, a land to which he was bound by strong emotional and musical ties.
"It is an honor to feel like a camagüeyano" he confessed in 2019 to Prensa Latina in a conference with local media in the preparations for the Fiesta del Tinajón, another of the cultural programs he sponsored to enhance Cuban music in these lands.
Themes of his authorship such as ¿Y qué tú quieres que te den?, A bailar el toca toca, or A Bayamo en coche, distinguished the best of Cuban son.
Recognized with the National Music Prize and protagonist of emblematic groups in the Caribbean country such as Son 14 and Adalberto Álvarez and his Son, the pianist and composer garnered various international awards.
The Illustrious Son of the City of Camagüey, with more than 30 musical productions, a faithful defender of Cuban musical roots, died from Covid-19 in the month of October 2021.
