The cyclist from Manzanillo will begin this second stage with the prestigious Spanish club in the Almería race
Cuban cyclist Arlenis Sierra renewed her contract with Spanish club Movistar, one of the most prestigious in the cycling landscape in Europe, and will compete for a second year with a team in which she continues to be essential.
The athlete from Manzanillo will make her debut on January 29th in this second stage with Movistar in the one-day race "Costa de Almería Women Sport 2023," in southern Spain. The 30-year-old athlete is part of the peloton led by Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten, world number one and Olympic champion.
According to her team's official website, the Cuban cyclist is "appreciated by her teammates, for her warmth and her enormous abilities."
They highlight in the Cuban "a positioning like no one else in the peloton," as well as a very intelligent vision of the race to be contested, linked to "a natural talent." They explain that Sierra has been essential for many of the victories of Dutch cyclist Annemiek at the world level.
"The Cuban presented an almost unbeatable track record. Five victories, including the first stage of the worldtour Tour de Romandie and the overall classification of the Vuelta a Andalucía, plus a new Pan American road title or magnificent results in Flanders (4th), Liège (7th) or the World Championship (6th). She will surely continue to be one of the best news stories for Movistar Team in 2023," her club expressed.
Sierra was recently distinguished as one of the best "10 athletes" of the year on the island, as well as the "best athlete" contracted abroad. The athlete from Manzanillo is currently the main player in Cuban cycling, having joined Spanish club Movistar in November 2021, after five seasons with Italian club Astana.
"I want to take advantage of this new experience, get the most out of this two-year contract, achieve even better results and improve as a rider and as a person," said the athlete from Havana after signing with the prestigious Iberian club.
Sierra is one of the strongest cyclists in a peloton during her races, evident in the elite ranks of world clubs. The athlete from Manzanillo has also won overall classifications in the famous Giro Toscana and the Vuelta a Costa Rica.
