Distinguished Cuban musician Chucho Valdés received the Leonard Bernstein Grand Prize "For the Elevation of Music in Society" Monday night in the United States.
According to an announcement on his social networks, the award was presented to him by Karen Zorn, president of the Longy School of Music, and Jamie Bernstein, daughter of the renowned American composer and orchestra conductor.
"I am happy because tonight I just received the great Leonard Bernstein prize for the elevation of music in society, it has been a wonderful evening," wrote the Cuban pianist.
For its part, the Longy School of Music highlighted Chucho Valdés as "the most influential figure in modern Afro-Cuban jazz" and praised the prolific career of the Cuban musician over more than 60 years.
"Valdés has distilled elements of the Afro-Cuban musical tradition, jazz, classical music, rock and more, into a deeply personal style," noted the American educational institution on its website.
Likewise, it added that "Valdés embodies many of the key values cultivated at Longy, including the freedom to explore, creative thinking and innovation, and the joy of making and sharing music with others."
Longy also highlighted Chucho Valdés' unique style, who has fused Afro-Cuban music with classical, jazz, rock and other genres.
A recipient of numerous Grammy and Latin Grammy awards, the Latin Recording Academy's Musical Excellence Award and a member of the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame, Chucho Valdés is one of the most internationally recognized Cuban musicians.
Born in 1941 into a musical family, his father Ramón —pianist, composer and orchestra conductor— was his first teacher.
At age 14 he graduated from the Municipal Conservatory of Music in Havana and in 1959 began his professional career as a member of the emblematic orchestra Sabor de Cuba, considered one of the most important in the history of modern Cuban music.
In 2023, another Cuban, Paquito D'Rivera received the same award, intended to honor artists who continue promoting and strengthening the role of music in society.
