Cuban singer-songwriter Carlos Varela, known as El Gnomo and one of the most emblematic figures of the nueva trova movement in Cuba, celebrated his 63rd birthday on April 11, 2026. Born in Havana in 1963 as Carlos Victoriano Varela Cerezo, he has spent decades crafting songs that paint the reality of Cuban youth with honesty, lyricism, and an unmistakable voice.
His career began gaining recognition in the 1980s on Havana's cultural stages. Songs like Guillermo Tell, Foto de familia, Jalisco Park, and Como los peces became generational anthems that transcended the island's borders. Varela has performed across Latin America, Europe, and the United States, establishing himself as one of Cuba's most internationally recognized composers.
Over the course of his career he has released albums including Jalisco Park (1989), Como los peces (1994), Nubes (1999), and No es el fin (2006), among others. In 2025 he collaborated with Alfredo Sanz to write a song dedicated to Real Madrid, a testament to his reach far beyond traditional Cuban music. The musical community and his fans around the world send him warm birthday wishes on this new anniversary.
