During Hispanic Heritage Month celebrated in the United States, Cuban Camila Cabello has become the first Latina woman to receive a diamond record for a single. "Havana" has earned her the award given by the American music industry, The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
RIAA celebrated on its social networks the awarding of the prize to Camila Cabello and the fact that the Cuban has made history. "I am honored to win a Diamond Single award from RIAA and I hope this paves the way for many more incredible Latin artists!", said the Cuban on her Instagram account. "Thank you to my incredible co-writers and producers Frank Dukes, Ali Tamposi, Andrew Watt, Pharrell, Lou Bell, Brian Lee, Starrah and Young Thug for being my collaborators on this award. And thank you to my incredible fans, I love you all", she added in her message.
"Havana" was released in August 2017 as part of her solo debut album Camila. In March 2018 it became the best-selling digital song worldwide with 10 million copies, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). It was streamed 2.6 billion times in total that year.
Frances Moore, executive director of IFPI, stated in 2018: "Camila Cabello is a perfect example of an artist who has drawn on her musical roots to produce her own unique sound that is capturing the hearts of fans around the world".
The "Havana" music video premiered in late October 2017, directed by Dave Meyers. It shows Camila Cabello playing Karla, a telenovela actress and film star. The music video features Lele Pons, LeJuan James, Noah Centineo, Marco DelVecchio and Mikey Pesante. It currently has 992,525,028 views. The song remained among the top 100 most-streamed songs in the US for 46 weeks. It was number one on Billboard's "Hot 100" chart.
Cabello, 24 years old, originally from Cojímar, Habana del Este, has been one of the international stars who have given visibility to the influence of Cuban music.
