"I can finally announce that I am part of the main cast of Coolie!!!" expressed the beautiful Cuban actress and influencer. According to her, she will assume the role of María, a character that will be part of this production throughout the 8 episodes of the series.

Likewise, in her post, Camila Arteche assured that she is pleased to be able to honor her Cuban ancestors through her work in Coolie. And indeed, although she does not provide details about her character, through a report in Variety magazine, a bit more about the series became known.

What is Coolie about, the series starring Camila Arteche and Sian Chiong?

As we mentioned, through the Coolie series, Cuban actors Camila Arteche and Sian Chiong show part of Cuba's history. This is especially because the plot of the series is inspired by a period in our history that is not talked about very frequently.

According to a review in Variety magazine, the story is set in the 19th century, at a time when a new form of enslavement was implemented.

Apparently, at that time, Spanish authorities prohibited the continuation of the enslavement of people originally from Africa throughout the American continent. However, this posed a great dilemma for work on the lands, as it was African blacks who were responsible for doing it.

Therefore, instead of bringing Africans for work on the plantations, in Cuba they began to enslave people originally from China and other Asian countries. Let us recall that, by then, World War I caused extreme poverty in this region, making citizens vulnerable to this type of situation.

As a result, these Chinese and Asians who arrived in Cuba as slaves were known as "Coolie" or "Coolies". In that sense, the Coolie series, starring Camila Arteche and Sian Chiong, narrates precisely the drama that was experienced as a result of this new form of slavery.

For this production made entirely in English, and based on facts that occurred in Cuba, Arteche and Chiong are the only Cubans included in the cast. While the leading role is assumed by Chinese actress Louise Wong; and the direction is handled by Taiwanese-American director and screenwriter Arvin Chen.
