On March 4th, Cuban Boxing announced that Santiago native Guillermo Rigondeaux had a domestic accident.

"He is in the hospital in stable condition but his corneas were affected to the point that he cannot see, but this is expected to be a temporary condition. The accident occurred in the morning hours in the city of Miami. The boxer was transported to a local hospital and according to his representative he is in good spirits, but the public is asked to please pray for his health," said the specialized media outlet itself.

The accident occurred when a pressure cooker exploded while he was cooking at his home. Although the fighter has lost 80% of his vision, it is expected that he will gradually recover it.

Two weeks ago Guillermo Rigondeaux (20-3, 13 KOs) was defeated for the second consecutive time. In August 2021 Filipino John Casimero defeated him and in his last bout he had the same result against Vincent Astrolabio (17-3, 12 KOs), also born in the Asian country.

Although the fight was close, so much so that the judges voted 95-94 unanimously, this new defeat in Dubai gave a little more credence to those who think that the future of the Cuban in the ring is very close to coming to an end.

About the fight, fellow boxer Yordenis Ugás expressed:

«About Rigo, he lost. I believe without a doubt, he is one of the best fighters in Cuban history. He is 41 years old in a low weight class which is more difficult to maintain the level. But Rigo seems that despite his age his talent is there, he always gives the impression that with 3-4 more punches per round he will win the fight. Each person, especially each fan can say whatever they want about an athlete. But I have to go back, if you were the one who applauded Rigo's victories, without throwing punches, many times with boos and you were praising and justifying the school of Cuban boxing. You pampered him and showered him with praise and did not demand another type of fight 10 years ago. Today at 41 years old don't ask him for more brother, nor feel offended. I look at him and support him without asking for something that at this point he is no longer going to give.»
