Cuban athlete specializing in long jump and triple jump. She became world champion in triple jump at the Osaka 2007 World Championships and was runner-up at the Helsinki 2005 championships.
She began in athletics under the guidance of coach Arnaldo Charadán. In 2001 she became national juvenile champion in long jump. In 2002 she achieved the Central American and Caribbean title also in the juvenile category.
Her first major international success in the senior category was the bronze medal in long jump at the Santo Domingo 2003 Pan American Games.
Starting in 2005 she began competing in both long jump and triple jump events. That very year she caused a major upset by winning the silver medal in triple jump at the Helsinki World Championships, despite not being among the favorites. Her mark was 14.82, surpassed only by Jamaican Trecia Smith with 15.11. Additionally in those same championships she finished fourth in long jump.
2007 was her best year so far. In the indoor track season she was the leader of the world rankings with a jump of 14.80 achieved in Düsseldorf. In the summer she won two medals at the Rio de Janeiro Pan American Games (gold in triple jump and bronze in long jump).
At the Osaka 2007 World Championships she became world champion in triple jump with her best-ever mark of 15.28, decisively beating Russian Tatiana Lébedeva (silver with 15.07) and Greek Hrysopiyi Devetzi (bronze with 15.04)
She measures 1.65m and weighs 53 kg. Her coach is Milán Matos, the same coach who also trained Iván Pedroso.
