Cuban pianist, composer, arranger, director and record producer. His work is recognized internationally in countries such as Germany, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Nicaragua, China, Thailand, India, Cambodia and Vietnam, where he has brought the most authentic elements of Cuban culture.

He was born in Placetas, Villa Clara, Cuba. He began playing piano in a self-taught manner at the age of three and at four he began his studies under the tutelage of his father Sixto López Contreras. At five he did not compose an opera because his teacher at that time did not allow him to approach sheet music until he turned eleven, with whom he also studied clarinet and double bass; he also studied orchestration and composition with his father.

Being very young, he felt attracted to rock and worked with the group Korpus, which cultivated this style in his native city. At fifteen, he moved to Santa Clara and developed his first works with Los Fakires, for whom he made musical arrangements with a fusion of rock and Cuban music.

His four brothers: Fernando, Silvio, Juan and Sixto, the first three are active musicians, the last was a sculptor graduated from the San Alejandro Academy, now deceased.

In 1974 he traveled with Los Fakires through Germany, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and the USSR. In 1975 he was part of the Central Army Band in Matanzas, where he played clarinet and saxophone, while directing an orchestra that existed within this band, which in 1979 was presented in the contest for the centennial of the danzón, and won the award for best work and best instrumental soloist, with the arrangement of the danzón Las Alturas de Simpson.

He returned again to Santa Clara to direct the group Raíces Nuevas.

In 1984 he traveled with Raíces Nuevas to Germany and subsequently to the Jazz Festival in Nicaragua. In 1985 he moved to Havana where he worked with different musicians and alternated as a producer for EGREM.

In 1987 he traveled to (China, Thailand, India, Cambodia, Vietnam). In 1988 he formed the group Pucho López y su Grupo, which successfully toured different countries in Europe.

In 1990 he created a recording studio. In 1991 he won the prize from the Ibero-American Television Organization (OTI) and in 1993 an arrangement of his was awarded at the Viña del Mar festival. His music at international jazz festivals has been brought to different stages around the world. In Colombia he participated in the Show América and served as vice president of a record company.

More than fifty albums are due to his creativity. He produced albums for the group Anacaona, Bobby Carcassés. He honors the music of the most influential group in history, The Beatles through one of the richest and finest musical currents in the world, Cuban son and its various branches, among others. He made five albums with José Miguel Grego, which feature his compositions. He has composed works for film and television programs.

He was a member of Sara González's group. Pucho López stands out as a composer, the psychological depth of his music, closely related to jazz virtuosity, the force of rock and the lyricism of the classics.
