Roxana Gómez Calderón

Roxana Gómez Calderón (Cienfuegos, January 7, 1999) is a Cuban sprinter specializing in the 400 meters, widely regarded as Cuba's top female competitor in the event. Born and trained in Cienfuegos, she emerged as a national and continental athletics standout from a young age.

In 2016, she was part of the Cuban team in the 4×400 meters relay at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, marking her international debut. She then developed steadily and rose to the elite of her discipline.

At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, she qualified for the 400 meters final — becoming only the second Cuban woman to reach an Olympic final in the event — after clocking 49.71 seconds in the semifinals, just ten hundredths of a second shy of Ana Fidelia Quirós's national record.

In 2021, she was part of the Cuban relay team that won gold at the World Athletics Relays in Poland. In subsequent years she accumulated international experience at the Diamond League, the World Athletics Championships, and the Pan American Games.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Gómez again competed at the highest level, qualifying for the semifinals with a time of 50.38 seconds.

Her greatest individual achievement came on September 18, 2025, when she set the Cuban national record in the 400 meters with 49.48 seconds during the final of the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, finishing in sixth place. She was also recognized as one of the top athletes in Cienfuegos province in 2024.

In May 2026, Roxana Gómez opened her season in style by breaking into the podium at the Shanghai Diamond League, finishing third in the 400 meters with 50.24 seconds — her best mark of the year — behind Jamaica's Nickisha Pryce (49.75) and American Aaliyah Butler (49.78).
