Roberto Aquiles Chorens Dotres

Died: July 28, 2020

Born in La Habana. As a young man, he began taking piano lessons with Josefina Echegoyen, until the time came when he decided to take the entrance exams at the Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán. He studied piano and organ at the "Amadeo Roldán" Conservatory with professors Oscar Lorié, César López and Manuel Suárez.

He completed his degree in Musicology at the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba and is also a graduate of the degree in Hispanic Language and Literature at the Universidad de La Habana. He holds the academic rank of Master in Art, granted by the Instituto Superior de Arte.

He served as Director of the Escuela Nacional de Música, Director of the Centro Nacional de la Música de Concierto, Dean of the Faculty of Music at the Instituto Superior de Arte and Director General of the Filarmónica Nacional de Cuba, a position he held for years along with the direction of the "Amadeo Roldán" Conservatory.

For several years he was a writer and scriptwriter for specialized radio programs and later hosted the television program Bravo dedicated to music and dance.

He taught the courses "Appreciation and History of Musical Art", "Music and Cuban Musicians", and "Cuba: songs and emotions" on the Cuban television program "Universidad para Todos".

Founder of the Movement of Children's and Youth Symphony Orchestras of Cuba, he has received several awards and distinctions in his country, such as the "Distinction for Cuban Education", Diploma for Pedagogical Merit, the Distinction for National Culture and the "Alejo Carpentier" Medal.

His career as a musicologist and organ performer has developed in Cuba and on stages in France, Ecuador, Italy, Vatican City, Colombia, Sweden and Spain. Specialized in the repertoire of works from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, he has been responsible for the world premiere of scores that were especially dedicated to him by several Cuban composers.

He has received several awards and distinctions in his country, such as:

Distinction for Cuban Education
Diploma for Pedagogical Merit
Distinction for National Culture
"Alejo Carpentier" Medal
National Prize for Artistic Education 2015, for his vast and fruitful trajectory as a pedagogue in different institutions in Cuba where he also held management positions with great success
