Rafael Ortiz Rodríguez

Died: December 29, 1994

===BODY===
Born in Cienfuegos. Member of the Septeto Nacional de Ignacio Piñeiro. Previously belonged to other son groups.

Rafael Ortiz Rodríguez. Guitarist and composer. Glory of Cuban son; transcends in Cuban music for his excellent quality as a composer.

He studied guitar with Vicente Borroto and Bienvenido Pérez. He gave the Bolero Son genre a touch of elegance and originality, which has made him transcend.

He began his artistic career with a duo that he formed with Rafael Ilalagorri. He was a member of the sextets Cienfuegos, Santa Cecilia, Melodías de Ramito and Ron San Carlos; he worked as a singer for the orchestras of Teódulo Sánchez and Paco Hernández, from Cienfuegos.

Around 1930 he moved to Havana, here he was part of the orchestra of the cabaret El Infierno, later he joined the septets Típico Santiaguero, directed by Manuel Borgellá (Mozo), Los Criollitos, El Habanero.

In 1931 he joined the ensemble La Clave Oriental, directed by Manuel Poveda, with which he made a tour in 1933 —organized by the cabaret Montmartre— to Chicago, where he participated in the Fair-Exhibition A Century of Progress; at this event he coincided with the Septeto Nacional de Ignacio Piñeiro.

Upon his return, he continued at the cabaret Montmartre, and shortly after moved to the Casino Nacional, in this latter venue, and at the Summer Casino, he sang with the orchestra of Armando Valdespí.

He also was part of the orchestras Arcaño y sus Maravillas, Pedrito Calvo, padre, Muñoz, Luis Carrillo, El quinteto Tomé, El conjunto Gloria Matancera, directed by Juan Manuel Díaz, in which he sang and played the double bass. With this group he traveled in 1940 to Tampa and Key West.

In 1959 he joined the Septeto Nacional de Ignacio Piñeiro, and in 1969, until his death, he was its director. He died in Havana, Cuba on December 29, 1994.
