Omar Almeida Quintana

Almeida is a Cuban International Grand Master of chess.

He becomes champion of the Capablanca in Memoriam tournament in 1999, participating in the mixed group.

In 2001 he repeats the title at the Capablanca now in the Premier Group. That same year he wins the Guillermo García in Memoriam tournament. He obtains the title of International Master.

From 2003 to 2008 he resides in Spain where he consolidates his game and reaches his highest ELO rating up to that moment, 2,593 points, after playing 64 games without losing and winning several competitions in Europe. FIDE grants him the title of Grand Master in 2006.

He wins the IV Mollet del Vallés Open International Tournament in 2011.

He conquers the national Blitz chess championship held in Santa Clara in 2019.

He becomes champion of the third La Vega 2019 Open Chess Tournament, held in the Dominican Republic.

In 2020 he plays in the final of the 2020 National Men's Chess Championship in Santa Clara where he finishes in seventh place with 5 points.

In January 2022 he won the Club Caissa International Chess Open, organized virtually from Guatemala with the participation of 11 grand masters and about a hundred players from 17 countries.

On September 1st he achieved the title in the Maia 2022 Chess Open in Portugal, where he finished undefeated, ending with 7.5 units with six victories and three draws.

On Sunday, September 11th at the Diputación de La Coruña 2022 International Chess Open in Spain, Omar finished in second place in the event against local Fide Master (FM) Luis Marcos Medarde, who lost after just 20 moves of a Sicilian Defense.

He was crowned undefeated champion of the Excelsior Toronto 2023 International Chess Tournament, an event that came to an end on September 10th in Canada. The Grand Master had an impeccable finish by achieving consecutive victories over host Aaron Mendes and South Korean player Haneul Park, which earned him accumulate 7.5 points out of a possible nine.
