Noel Navarro

Journalist, narrator of novels and short stories, and essay writer.

He completed primary education at the Escuela Normal de Holguín (Oriente); secondary education at the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza de Santa Clara.

After finishing secondary education, he moved to Camagüey, where he helped in the Movimiento Revolucionario 26 de Julio[3], which opposed the regime of Fulgencio Batista. Noel Navarro was one of the writers who followed Rolando Escardó.

After Batista fell and during the time of the Revolution, he worked at the Instituto Nacional de Reforma Agraria.
In 1960, he participated in the Encounter of Poets and Artists that was held in Camagüey.

The following year, 1961, he attended the Congress of Writers and Artists of Cuba that took place in La Habana.

In 1968 he participated in the 150th anniversary of Baguiv (from the province of Taskent, Uzbekistan, then part of the Soviet Union).

He was a member of the Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC).

As a journalist, he directed the magazine Culturales and worked for the following publications:

He was a member of the Department of International Relations of the Consejo Nacional de Cultura.
He provided his services as a specialist in the Literature Department of the Instituto Cubano del Libro, where he worked until his retirement.

His testimonial novel Vida de Marcial Ponce won mention in the 1970 26 de Julio Competition.
He was awarded by UNEAC in 1970 for his novel Zona de silencio.
In 1972 he won the prize in the Casa de las Américas Competition for his short story collection La huella del pulgar.
Príncipe de Asturias Prize in the novel category, 1992 for El asedio.
With El sol de mediodía he received the International Novel Prize "Andalucía".
