Newton Briones Montoto

Died: December 29, 2023

Cuban historian, essayist, and writer. Younger brother of revolutionary martyr Antonio Briones Montoto (1939-1967), who died at age 27 on an internationalist mission in Venezuela.

In 1975 he graduated with a degree in History from the University of Havana. Since 1970 he worked—among other positions, as a diplomat—in the Ministry of Interior (in Havana) for 28 years, until 1989.

Briones Montoto has specialized in Cuban republican history, and dedicated himself to researching and reconstructing Cuba's past during the period between 1925 and 1958.

Briones is a member of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC).

His articles have been published in various magazines (Verde Olivo and Bibliotecas) and in the newspaper Granma (from Havana), among other serial publications.

Before these articles, particularly in his book General regreso, Briones Montoto had presented a profound analysis on the figure of Eduardo Chibás.
