Miguel de Cárdenas Chávez

Died: January 1, 1890

Cuban writer of the nineteenth century who distinguished himself through his poetry. He collaborated in publications of his time.

He was born in La Habana. He studied philosophy at the Real Instituto de San Isidro, in Madrid, and the first year of the Law degree program.

He entered the army and served in the Guardia Real. He was part of the Regimiento de La Habana with the rank of lieutenant. Later, as a captain, he joined the Regimiento de Valencey. Subsequently, he was part of the Milicias de Caballería as Coronel Agregado.

He was an honorary member of the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, a vocal of the Junta de Maternidad y Beneficencia and member of the Junta Superior de Instrucción Pública. He was also a Consejero de Administración, Gentilhombre de Cámara and Senator of the Kingdom.

He collaborated in «La Prensa», «Diario de La Habana», «Artista (Revista)|El Artista», «Revista de La Habana», «El Correo», «La Civilización», «La Floresta» and «Faro Industrial de La Habana», in which he also worked as co-editor. In «La Gaceta de Puerto Príncipe» he published, in prose or verse, a weekly serial of customs.
