Miguel Angel Botalín Panpín

Founder and one of the most prominent artists of the Sociedad Cultural Galería, a collective of great importance in Cuban artistic and social life during the 1950s. Distinguished professor and cultural promoter who, from a very young age, held various positions in several national institutions.

Botalín began his studies at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas José Joaquín Tejada, in Santiago de Cuba. In 1953, he became involved in the creation of the Grupo Plástico de Oriente, an institution of great prominence.

He actively participated in the Clandestine Struggle. After the revolutionary triumph, he held several positions in the cultural sphere, including Provincial Director of Culture in Santiago de Cuba.

He served as a professor at the School of Fine Arts, advisor to the Minister of Culture Dr. Armando Hart Dávalos, director of the Revista Revolución y Cultura, and director of the Editorial Arte y Literatura of the Instituto Cubano del Libro.

He was also an advisor for UNESCO in Nicaragua and Historian of the City of Santiago de Cuba.

Botalín, Ferrer Cabello, and José Julián Aguilera Vicente constitute an indispensable triad when discussing the fine arts of Santiago.

Upon his retirement in 1992, he reinitiated his pictorial work with great force and vitality, which has achieved recognized prestige in Cuba and abroad. He possesses, among other awards, distinctions for National Culture and Raúl Gómez García, as well as the José María Heredia plaque and the Honor Prize of the International Festival CubaDisco 2011.
