Doctor of Medicine and Surgery. He was born in Güines in the province of La Habana to parents Pedro Francisco de la Calle and Tomasa Serrano, doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Paris.
He completed his primary studies in the town of Güines, then studied philosophy (high school) at Colegio San Cristóbal de La Habana. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in sciences on July 24, 1847, studied four years of medicine at the Real Universidad de La Habana between 1848 and 1852. He graduated as a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Paris on January 28, 1857.
He took the revalidation exam at the Universidad de La Habana, was a teaching assistant in clinical studies under professor Desmare and was a colleague of Cubans Ramos Luís Miranda, Albertini and Belot. Upon returning to Cuba he introduced the Ophthalmoscope which constituted a true novelty, when the instrument was generally unknown.
He was admitted to the Academia de Ciencias de La Habana on August 14, 1864.
When the Ten Years' War began, for maintaining his separatist ideas, he was subjected to persecution by the authorities of the Spanish colony and had to go into exile in Paris where he lived until his death.
