A native of Cienfuegos, Varela accumulated a fruitful work trajectory since graduating in Journalism in 1960, treasuring skills and knowledge of the craft, whether in the Press and Publications department of Inder, the pages of the newspaper Vanguardia in Santa Clara, —where he served as director—, collaborating in various radio programs or in the functions of editor-in-chief of the newspaper El Mundo.
In April 1969 he would begin work as a reporter for the newspaper Granma, earning the respect and admiration of all his colleagues, with almost five decades of uninterrupted work and a voice of experience for young professionals. He was an expert on sugar issues.
He was also Head of the Information Group of Granma, an active member of the UPEC, and of the Communist Party of Cuba.
In 1996 he became the first recipient of the National Award for Sugar Journalism.
Varela Pérez died in Havana at the age of 79.
