She holds a degree in Social Sciences. Wife and companion of the master Cintio Vitier, mother of two of the greatest contemporary composers: Sergio and José María, sister-in-law of another great figure in our letters, also deceased, Eliseo Diego, she was one of the two women of the Orígenes group (along with Cleva Solís) headed by José Lezama Lima, between the years 1944 and 1956. Since her youth she had shown her inclination toward literature.

In 1961 she obtained her Doctorate in Social Sciences, dedicating herself from then on to literary research, collaborating with different media in the field of poetry, essays, and literary criticism.

Since 1962 she worked as a literary researcher at the Biblioteca Nacional José Martí and from its founding in 1977 until 1987 she belonged to the Centro de Estudios Martianos, where she achieved the category of Literary Researcher, integrated into the team that produced the critical edition of the Complete Works of José Martí.

Her poetry has been translated into several languages. Among other anthologies, it appears in those by Carmen Conde: Eleven Great Spanish American Poetesses, Madrid, 1967; and in that by Margaret Randall: Breaking the Silence, Vancouver, Canada, 1982. She was awarded the National Literature Prize in 1990. That same year, Jorge Luis Arcos's study appeared: On the Poetics of Fina García Marruz.

She has received various decorations and important prizes and recognitions. Among them: Alejo Carpentier Order, Distinction for National Culture, Raúl Gómez García Distinction, Fernando Ortiz Medal of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, 30th Anniversary Medal of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, August 23rd Distinction of the Federation of Cuban Women, Emeritus Professor of the University of La Habana, Adopted Daughter of Bayamo.
