José Manuel Guarch Delmonte

Died: September 26, 2001

Scientist recognized nationally and internationally for the contributions he has made in various fields of human knowledge such as Archaeology, Speleology and History; in addition to standing out as a literary figure and poet.

Born in Camagüey, descendant of a small merchant and a homemaker. He actively participates in student struggles and political activities such as the demonstrations of March 10, the AAA movement, the MNR and begins his collaboration with the youth of the Popular Socialist Party. He joins the Movement 26 of July clandestinely and subsequently becomes part of the Rebel Army in its Research Department.

He founds and presides over the Yarabey group, made up of enthusiasts of Social and Natural Sciences, especially Archaeology and Speleology, and in 1948 visited for the first time an archaeological site at the Vista Hermosa estate in Camagüey. He holds for a time the position of director of the National Aquarium and is subsequently appointed Head of Archaeological Excavations of the Anthropology department of the National Commission for the ACC, beginning from then on an uninterrupted sequence of archaeological explorations and excavations that to date total more than 300, directing multiple research projects.

Guarch is part of the directory "Who's Who in Sciences in Cuba," a repertoire that constitutes a valuable source of reference information and a tool for decision-making in Science and Technology policy.

He begins to develop his literary and journalistic interests in magazines such as "El Viajante" and newspapers such as "Acción Libre" and was selected by the Ministry of Culture as "Cultural Personality of the Nation" for his work and social activity.
