José Augusto Escoto

Died: February 2, 1935

Poet. Collaborated in important publications. Researched Cuban literature. Dedicated herself to criticism and literature.

She completed primary education in Matanzas. In 1880 she graduated with a bachelor's degree from the Instituto de La Habana and enrolled in Medicine, which she abandoned to dedicate herself to literature and criticism. In 1900 she succeeded Carlos M. Trelles as director of the Biblioteca Pública de Matanzas.

She collaborated in El Correo de Matanzas, Yucayo, El Republicano Conservador, Juventud, La Discusión, Revista de Instrucción Primaria, Cuba y América, Revista Bimestre Cubana (second epoch), where she published her research on Cuban history and literature.
She published historical, critical and bibliographic journal of Cuban literature (Matanzas, 1916) of which only four issues were published, in which she made known some important correspondence from Cuban letters.

In 1918 her "Contribution to the history of the first Franciscan Order on the Island of Cuba" was awarded, published in Chronicle of the historical-literary competition held in the city of La Habana on April 11, 1918, in homage to Cardinal Fray Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros on the fourth centenary of his death, which occurred in Roa on November 8, 1517 (La Habana, Editora El Debate, 1918, p. 417-491).
She contributed unpublished documents and wrote the introduction to the Complete Works of José Jacinto Milanés. Vol. 1. Poetry. (La Habana, Imp. El Siglo XX, 1920, p. IX-XXIX).
