Berlanga

Outstanding Cuban researcher. Head of projects at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. Member of the State Council of the Republic of Cuba since April 19, 2018, being reelected in the extraordinary session of the IX Legislature of the National Assembly of People's Power held on October 10, 2019, a position he will hold until 2023.

He was born in Bayamo, capital municipality of Granma province. He had a normal childhood like any other Cuban child.

He completed his secondary studies on scholarship at the provisional vocational school "Boris Luis Santa Coloma", of the Plan viandero de Veguita (Yara). Later he studied at the vocational school "José Martí", in Holguín, and then went on to study Veterinary Medicine at what was then called ISCAB, today Universidad de Granma.

He assumed research-related tasks starting September 1, 1991 at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. He belongs to the biomedical area, dedicated to the diagnosis and therapy of diseases that afflict human beings. He dedicates himself to researching wound healing and tissue regeneration.

He began working on the pharmacology of topical application of growth factor (today Hebermin cream, at that time Facdermin).

Between 1994 and 1995 he completed a fellowship in the best wound healing and plastic surgery laboratories in Canada. This fellowship had an important impact on his professional training and allowed him to meet opinion leaders on the subject.

In the last five-year period of the 1990s he began working on the pharmacology of epidermal growth factor injection, which laid the groundwork for the experimental or hypothetical basis of Heberprot-P.

Developing a series of experiments, the first gave rise to the circumstantial or hypothetical basis of Heberprot-P, obtaining excellent results internationally thereafter. The emergence of Heberprot-P, unique of its kind in the world, changes the paradigms in the management of diabetic foot ulcers.

In the Constitutive Session of the IX Legislature on April 19, 2018, members of Parliament elected him as a member of the State Council of the Republic of Cuba.

Reelected in the extraordinary session of the IX Legislature of the National Assembly of People's Power held on October 10, 2019, a position he will hold until 2023.

He currently works at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology and holds a Master's in Pathological Sciences, a Doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and two postdoctorates from prestigious institutions in plastic surgery, wound healing, and pathology.
