Humberto López Morales

Secretary General of the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language since 1994.

Humberto López Morales was born in La Habana, Cuba, in 1936. He completed his undergraduate degree at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (specialty in linguistics and literature) at the Universidad de La Habana in 1958. Two years later he obtained his degree in Philosophy and Letters (section of Romance Philology) at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In 1962 he earned his doctorate in Philosophy and Letters (section of Romance Philology) at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with the Linguistic Study of the Églogas by Juan del Encina, directed by Prof. Dr. Rafael Lapesa.

He was Assistant and Associate Professor at several American universities (New Hampshire in Durham and Texas in Austin). In 1973 he was appointed Full Professor at the Universidad de Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus, where he created the Institute of Linguistics (current Graduate Program in Linguistics).

He was president of the Association of Linguistics and Philology of Latin America, between 1987 and 1999. He serves on the Editorial Board of several journals and on the Advisory Commission of the Department of Spanish Urgente of the Agencia EFE. He has been president of the Linguistic Society of Hispanic Caribbean since 1978.

He is a Full Member of the Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española, Corresponding Member of several Academies (Spanish, Argentine, Uruguayan, Chilean, Colombian, Salvadoran and North American), Honorary Member of the Nicaraguan and Philippine Academies, and Member of the Board of Trustees of Instituto Cervantes. He is Doctor honoris causa by the Universidad de Valladolid. Likewise, he has received the Encomienda with plaque of the Order of Alfonso X el Sabio.

His scientific work encompasses more than two hundred fifty titles, with more than fifty books. In 1992, he received recognition from hispanists in the monograph Homenaje a Humberto López Morales.
